The Majestic Great Dane
The Great Dane, also known as the "Apollo of Dogs" or the "Gentle Giant," is a breed of dog that is known for its impressive size and regal appearance. These dogs are true giants, standing as tall as 32 inches or more at the shoulder and weighing up to 200 pounds. But despite their imposing size, Great Danes are known for their gentle and loving nature, making them a popular choice for families and individuals alike. In this guide, we will explore the history, characteristics, and care of the Great Dane breed.
History:
The Great Dane's origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where large hunting dogs were used to take down large game such as wild boar and deer. These dogs were then brought to Europe by the Celts, where were further developed in to the working dog similar to today’s Great Dane. They also became a status symbol to royals and nobility. The Great Dane has been portrayed sitting quietly by their King’s/Queen’s throne. The Great Dane was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and has since become a beloved companion animal all over the world.
Characteristics:
Great Danes are known for their large and imposing size, but they are also known for their gentle and loving nature and therefore called “gentle giants.” They have a short and shiny coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, blue, fawn, and also the patterns of harlequin, brindle, mantle, and merle. There are also many variations of these colors and patterns that are not recognized by the Great Dane Club of America such as tan point, lilac, chocolate. They have a long, narrow head with a strong jaw, and their ears can be either cropped or left natural. They have a deep chest and a powerful build, making them a formidable sight.

Temperament:
Great Danes are known for their calm and gentle temperament. They are friendly and affectionate with their family, and they are also good with children. They are not known to be aggressive or territorial, and they are generally good with other animals. Like any dog, they require proper training and socialization, however, this is especially important with a giant dog. A poorly trained great dane that chews on a couch will do far more damage than a poorly trained chihuahua!
Great Danes have published average lifespan of 6-8 years. This short life span is largely due to backyard breeding without proper health testing. It's essential to be aware of the potential health issues that are associated with the breed such as hip dysplasia, bloat (Gastric torsion) and Cardiomyopathy. When selecting a breed that is prone to these health issues it's crucial to choose a reputable breeder who only breeds from health tested parents with long lines of healthy dogs. Properly bred puppies from healthy lines will frequently live 10+ years, and save your pocket book from a lot of vet visits.
One attribute that cannot be overstated is the deep love a Great Dane has for their humans. Great Danes are incredibly loyal and are known as “Velcro dogs” meaning they want to be with you wherever you are. You will never go to the bathroom alone again! Great Danes connect with their human’s on a whole different level than other breeds. Talk to a Great Dane owner and you will find that once you get a Great Dane no other breed can compare!
